over a 21-day period, the researchers discovered that after the initial sunscreen application, the concentration of the six chemicals increased within the bloodstream each day it was applied, and stayed above FDA-mandated safety levels at day seven—which was after the study participants had stopped applying it. Not only that, levels of the ingredients homosalate and oxybenzone were still above safety thresholds on day 21.

The findings support those from a pilot study conducted by the FDA last year, which also found that four popular chemical sunscreen ingredients (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule) were easily absorbed into the skin and went into the bloodstream after one day of use.

Good Ingredients in Ginger Armor:

Sunscreens

Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano to keep the user and nature safe) is a mineral sunscreen and the only FDA approved sunscreen ingredient to cover both UVA & UVB sun rays.

Zinc oxide is a safe and effective ingredient in photoprotective products. It is photostable, nonphotoreactive,[19

(Moloney FJ, Collins S, Murphy GM

Am J Clin Dermatol. 2002; 3(3):185-91.

Zinc oxide is nonphotocatalytic.[12] It has little potential for irritation or sensitization.

(Nash JF Dermatol Clin. 2006 Jan; 24(1):35-51.)

Titanium Dioxide is a mineral sunscreen covering UVB and partial UVA sun rays.

Titanium Dioxide 7.8%, Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano) 9.0%

“Titanium dioxide is a broad-spectrum UV filter that does not penetrate the stratum corneum.” (Reena Rai, Sekar C Shanmuga, and CR Srinivas 2012)

Emolients

Stearic Acid has been shown to protect skin's surface against water loss and help shore up skin's protective barrier.

Coconut Alkanes is a volatile (something that does not absorb into the skin but evaporates from it), naturally derived vegetable alkane coming from renewable sources. It is a light, oily liquid that works as an emollient and gives a smooth skin feel.

Coco Caprylate/Caprate is a vegetable ingredient obtained from coconut. It presents a high level of biocompatibility with skin and therefore has the ability to penetrate deep and help skin to repair itself. It acts as an emollient and provides skin with incredible softness.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride creates a barrier on the skin's surface, which helps to reduce skin dryness by decreasing the loss of moisture.

Aids in making the sunscreen clear and lightweight

Alumina is an anti-caking agent: absorbing excess moisture by coating particles and making them water-repellent. It holds onto oils so they don't look shiny.

Polyhydroxystearic Acid is a commonly used dispersant for ultrafine titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. It renders the zinc oxide particles extremely hydrophobic and lipophilic, so that they are easily dispersed in esters, mineral oils and silicone fluids.

Terminology

Comedogenic

http://mosskincare.com/the-truth-about-comedogenic-ingredients-and-acne-prone-skin/

Video: dermatologists vary in what they consider comedogenic. Proof tests aren’t done in real life conditions. The most common test is the rabbit ear model, they apply the substance to the inside of a rabbits ear (because it’s much more sensitive than human skin) there were tons of false positives with this.

Nanomaterials are ultrafine single particles with a diameter less than 100 nm. (these can enter your bloodstream)

(Maynard A. Nanotechnology: A research strategy for addressing risk. Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. 2006. Jun, [Last accessed 2007 Dec 1])

The adverse effects of nanoparticles include interface for catalytic reactions, complexes with proteins which can escape immunological surveillance, induction of autoimmune diseases

(Donaldson K, Stone V, Tran CL, Kreyling W, Borm PJ. Nanotoxicology. Occup Environ Med. 2004;61:727–8. )

Ginger Armor is ultra fine to keep it from being pasty, thick or white in appearance, but still 280 nm so it doesn’t risk ending up in your bloodstream (100nm or less is considered a nano particle)

Oxybenzone is not photostable and can generate oxygen radicals upon UV exposure.(Schallreuter KU, Wood JM, Farwell DW, Moore J, Edwards HG J Invest Dermatol. 1996 Mar; 106(3):583-6.)

There is a concern about its endocrine and carcinogenic effect even though current scientific studies have not supported this fears.

(Janjua NR, Mogensen B, Andersson AM, Petersen JH, Henriksen M, Skakkebaek NE, Wulf HC

J Invest Dermatol. 2004 Jul; 123(1):57-61.)

Avobenzone

Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane or avobenzone provides superior protection through a large portion of the UVA range, including UVA I. Despite its efficacy and broad spectrum, avobenzone is intrinsically photounstable and significant photodegradation can occur with a loss of 50–90% of molecules after 1 hour of UV exposure.

(Photostability assessment of sunscreens. Benzylidene camphor and dibenzoylmethane derivatives. Deflandre A, Lang GInt J Cosmet Sci. 1988 Apr; 10(2):53-62.)

10/10 for this spf for sensitive skin!

I am extremely particular about the ingredients in my skincare. I don’t have words to tell you how excited I was to purchase this eco-conscious brand!! I LOVE that it’s plant-based and that it packs argon oil and squalene in with spf 50 😎 Thank you creating a 2-in-1 moisturizer that doesn’t smell or leave a weird white film on my face! I’m. So. Grateful!! 👩🏻‍🦰

wow thank you for the 10/10 rating Ashley! I'm also extremely particular about the ingredients in my skincare and really appreciate your review-the ingredients I chose to use are intentional and I'm really proud that they are good for you and eco-conscious-this was not easy to do while also keeping it not smelly, or leaving a white film on your face. I really appreciate you noticing and saying so. Thank you for your support Ashley!

Never switching sunscreens again

Ginger Armor is my favorite skincare product. That sentence ends in a period. It means period, and implies no further explanation needed, but since you insist I’ll tell you why!

Ginger Armor is the most thoughtfully formulated sunscreen on the market. It’s lightweight, doesn’t leave any white marks or oily residues on my face, and probably best of all has allowed me to replace certain steps in my skincare routine! I used to take a couple of drops of Argan oil and vitamin E and spread them on my face. Thanks to GA I no longer waste my time doing extra steps or buying extra product (more space in my bathroom!).

I also appreciate that it’s housed in aluminum. More recycling centers are equipped to process aluminum than the plastic bottles most other sunscreens come in. This also allows me to keep a bottle in my car without worrying about the container melting or leaching plastic chemicals into my sunscreen (and then onto my face!). I use it before I leave the house, but keep one in my car to reapply when surfing or hiking, especially for friends who forget to apply.

I also love that it doesn’t contain a fragrance! It has a pleasant nutty scent that dissipates once applied, so it never clashes with my cologne.

Take it from someone who is probably too proud of the fact that most people think he’s still in his twenties because of his skin: Ginger Armor is the be-all end-all of sunscreens, and deservedly so.

Thank you for your review Ashe! I am so grateful that you love Ginger Armor and appreciate you spreading the word about why you do!

Yaassssss

This product is amazing! Truly a great moisturizer and powerful sunscreen in one. And the best part!? It really does rub in clear no white marks or patches. Will definitely be making this apart of my daily routine :)

I'm so happy you like it and are making it apart of your daily routine Scott!

This is the only sunscreen I use now. It’s light, effective, and easy to apply. The best out there.

Finally a sunscreen I'll use every day

I was skeptical, but so glad I took a chance on yet another sunscreen. I'm very prone to burning and have had many skin cancers removed, so sun protection is not optional for me. But most sunscreens burn like hell once they inevitably get in my eyes. Typical mineral sunscreens that don't irritate my eyes are gloopy and hard to spread and work in--lots of white streaks and missed spots. I was a very irregular user because of these shortfalls, and have mostly relied on long sleeves and big hats.

But this stuff is great! No burning. Spreads and rubs in easily. And a moisturizer to boot. Now I'm applying it daily. My dermatologist will be happy.

I am so grateful that you gave Ginger Armor a chance and use it regularly. Thank you for letting folks know that it doesn't sting your eyes and spreads nicely and for being vulnerable and telling people about your cancers. I hope more people will wear sunscreen regularly to prevent skin cancer. Thank you for your review Dennis, it means a lot to me! -Skyler Brady, Ginger Armor

Finally, the perfect sunscreen.

If you’re like me and have systematically tried every single sunscreen you could find in every price range with both mineral and chemical sunscreen and ones that work well for face and body, you’ll know how hard it is to find a good one. Ginger Armor seriously knocks it out of the park. It’s lightweight and non-greasy, it rubs in clear unlike thicker mineral sunscreens (how ?!!), it super easy to apply and doesn’t have the usual “sunscreen smell”. It smells nice and feels nice and I feel comfortable wearing it out daily. With other brands, I’d be worried about looking greasy or pasty white all day. Also, this bottle has lasted me forever which put all reservations aside about the slightly higher than average price. Recently bought two new bottles, one for home and one to keep in my bag.

Thank you so much of your review Matt! This means so much to me and I'm so glad you love using Ginger Armor. Thank you for your support!

I am absolutely thrilled with this sunscreen! It feels fantastic on my skin—lightweight with a soft, moisturizing texture. Since I started using it, I've noticed a significant improvement in the brightness and smoothness of my skin. I can't recommend this product enough. It has become an essential part of my morning routine, the first thing I apply after washing my face. Plus, I never let the kids leave the house without it. It's a must-have for all of us!

Love the feel on my skin of Ginger Armor. The packaging is terrific, too.

I really liked that this left no white cast and feels like moisturizer. I'm pleased to use a sunscreen that is environmentally friendly. I did notice a slight odor--it doesn't bother me and doesn't smell like a typical sunscreen. Rather, I think I'm smelling the mineral.

Best sunscreen out there!! If you’ve done your research you know that mineral sunscreen is the only way and this one has been perfected. No nano zinc and no white residue. So actually safe to put on your kids and no complaining about white marks! Truly the only sunscreen you should consider buying!!

It works like they say it does.

Pricey but feels light on my skin. I’m usually allergic to many sunscreens. This one no issues. Happy safe for ocean reefs. Going on a big trip and this is important to me

The texture of Ginger Armor is amazing! Goes on super smoothly and disappears right away. It slows down my freckle collection like a dream and leaves my skin feeling great! Not greasy or chalky-looking. This sunscreen is MUCH better than I expected and the packaging is brilliant. Practical and clean. I plan to be a customer for life!

As good as advertised

Most sunscreens give me contact dermatitis, so I’m always looking for one that my skin can tolerate, in addition to being reef safe, biodegradable, mineral-based, not over-scented, and blends well into my pale skin. This is the one! I’m very pleased with the results and am thrilled. The price is comparable to big name brands and performs better. And the packaging isn’t plastic! I highly recommend Ginger Armor, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Thank you so much for your review Brenda! I'm very grateful for your support!

Great all in one

I've been looking for a combo product for a while. I need extra sun protection but also a moisturizer bc let's face it, I'm not getting younger lol. This product provides both of these. I am also highly sensitive to anything on my face and this product works great on my sensitive skin. I don't have any flare ups or redness! Love it

Thank you so much for your review, I'm glad you and. your skin are loving Ginger Armor!

My husband and I both love this sunscreen! We’ve not been burnt once this entire summer. The best part is that it doesn’t cause acne and it feels really light on the skin. This bottle will probably last forever but we will be purchasing again for sure!

Shockingly great!

Do I have a collection of sunscreens at home most of whom have betrayed me in some way? Oh yeah! Was I skeptical that this would somehow be different. Yup. Was I pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong? No, I was outright shocked! This stuff is amazing!! I’m a flight paramedic and often get caught outside in the sun for an extended time on occasion. Ginger Armor is quick and easy to put on. It doesn’t run or sting your eyes when you sweat. Doesn’t feel gross. Multiple subsequent applications even feel like they’re barely there but still provide great coverage. I’m literally throwing all my other sunscreens away. My ONLY complaint is that I’ve noticed a little leaking / pooling around the pump, but it’s not excessive and I can usually just wipe it up with my finger and put it somewhere on my face for extra protection. Getting my second bottle so I don’t run out!

Your review means a lot to me Brian! I'm really grateful for you sharing this and am honored that you like to use my sunscreen!

Amazing stuff

Seriously love this stuff. Ginger airline pilot from TX. And I wear this religiously. Only bad is it says only two hours of direct sunlight? Most of the mineral stuff I use says 4 hours.

I really appreciate your review Casey! The FDA labelling requirement is 2 hours, sometimes all you need is 1 application per day (depending on how much UV/sun you're exposed to). I reapply every hour when I'm in the direct sunlight, but if it's a lower UV index, sometimes I just do it 1x and feel adequately protected.

Great Sunscreen

I’ve used a lot of sunscreen working outside as a horse trainer. I’ve always liked mineral sunscreens for lasting longer and being more effective than chemical, plus like not having it in my bloodstream… but I have always hated the feeling of “painting it on” because of how thick mineral based sunscreens can be. Or how they made me look like a ghost. I was thrilled to see how light and sheer Ginger armor really is. It’s pleasant to put on and I can use it anytime, not just when I don’t care about my looks. I also loved the eco-friendly packaging. Very impressed!

Thank you very much Grayson! I really appreciate your review and know the struggle of choosing between chemical and mineral sunscreens. I'm so glad that you like mine!

Love the packaging and it works. Seeing what I got, I think it is much more expensive than it needs to be. Probably wouldn’t buy again unless it was less expensive.
